Joan was a former actress and had known Nat Bussichio twenty-five years earlier when they had worked on a Roger Corman movie together and gotten romantically involved. They loved together for a while before being pulled apart by Nat's parents because he was Catholic and she was Jewish. Steve Sanders took it upon himself to set them up and try to reignite the flame between them.
However, they broke up a couple of months later, citing that they couldn't recapture the past. However, Clare Arnold and Susan Keats took it upon themselves to push them back together. Clare and Susan roped Steve Sanders and Brandon Walsh into a triple date with Nat and Joan to rekindle the flame. The plan worked when they visited the sight of their old home. Nat took Joan in his arms and gave her a kiss.
They eventually got married and had a son named Frankie.
