- „I'm not afraid of taking risks. I'm just sick of them”
Ivy Sullivan is the prankster, tomboy/surfer girl of West Beverly Hills High School. She has a fun, laid-back, personality, but does not wish to be labelled as "one of the guys". After graduating high school, she marries Raj Kher and begins studying photography at California University. After Raj's death, Ivy moves to Mexico with Diego Flores. Ivy is initially rivals with Naomi Clark, but the two later form a close bond. She becomes best friends with her surfing/lunch buddies Liam Court, Dixon Wilson, Teddy Montgomery, and Navid Shirazi, as well as all the girls.
Ivy first appears when she gets into a minor car accident with Liam Court. The two of them get into an argument over whose fault it is. They later reconcile at a Halloween party and become friends. Teddy realizes that Ivy has a crush on Liam, but she will not admit it. After a party, the two kiss in Liam's basement. Ivy helps him overcome his nemesis, Jen Clark. Liam eventually asks her to a dance, but it soon becomes apparent that he has his eyes set on fellow student Naomi Clark. Ivy then decides it is best for her and Liam to merely be friends, assisting him in his pursuit of Naomi by texting her to go and see Liam. She is devastated.Later, Naomi and Ivy try to form a friendly relationship of their own, which proves difficult since they don't share any of the same interests. The girls get into a physical fight on the beach about Liam and begin to hate one another. After losing Liam for good, Ivy is comforted by her mom, Laurel Cooper, a music producer. Later, Ivy starts a fake relationship with Dixon because the two of them feel left out being single. They kiss to prove to Naomi that they are really dating. Dixon develops some feelings for Ivy, but she wants to break up when she realizes she may still has a chance with Liam. Later, Liam tells her that they will never be together. Ivy decides to give Dixon a shot and go on a real date with him. With Dixon's gambling issues, their first date is catastrophic, and Ivy begins to ask herself if Dixon is really the guy for her. Their relationship recovers when she invites Dixon to Australia for the summer.
After Dixon leaves Australia, Ivy spends the summer with her mother. She returns with her childhood friend Oscar, who Dixon becomes immediately jealous of. After the earthquake, Ivy is excited about the waves and the three go to the beach, where Ivy notices Dixon's jealousy and leaves with Oscar, thinking that he is over-reacting. Ivy has a dream where she makes out with Oscar, making her confused. In" Age of Inheritance," Ivy is avoiding Oscar because of the dream, so he plans to set up Dixon with some girls at a bar. The pictures are sent to Ivy, who gets very upset with Dixon. Ivy reveals to Dixon that she is still a virgin and is ashamed of it, but Dixon is cool with it. Later, Ivy tells Dixon that she is ready to have sex until Dixon's ex-girlfriend, Sasha, shows up and makes Ivy feels insecure because she is an older woman. However, Dixon reassures her by telling her that Sasha is from his past and she doesn´t mean anything. Ivy later goes to talk to her mom, who supports her and tells her to have safe sex.At the Bachelor Auction, Sasha appears again and makes an effort to buy Dixon, but Ivy makes a higher bid to buy him and invites Dixon to her house to spend the night together, but Dixon never shows up. The next day, Ivy is worried because Dixon is avoiding her calls. When Oscar tells her about Dixon and Sasha, she confronts him. Dixon tells her that he is still in love with Sasha and breaks up with Ivy, which leads her straight into the arms of Oscar. In "How Much Is That Liam in the Window," Dixon apologizes to Ivy and explains that Sasha told him she could potentially have given him HIV and he was trying to protect Ivy. Dixon wants to get back together. Ivy decides not to tell him about losing her virginity to Oscar. While Ivy is talking with her mother, Oscar interrupts to tell Laurel that he slept with Ivy and to tell Ivy that he slept with Laurel during the summer, which results in Ivy getting into a huge argument with her mother. Ivy leaves while crying. Ivy attends "The Undies" with Dixon, where she confesses losing her virginity to Oscar. Dixon breaks up with Ivy because he can't forgive her. In "Mother Dearest," Ivy tries to apologize to Dixon, but he is still angry at her. The other boys are acting weird around her, making Ivy feel lonely. She cries in the school bathroom, where Naomi finds her and offers her help, but she tells Naomi that she doesn´t have any girlfriends. Naomi helps Ivy get revenge with Oscar by getting him naked in front of everyone at the Beach Club. This ultimately leads Naomi and Ivy into a closer friendship. They hang out with the rest of the girls and all become a close friend group. Oscar comes to Ivy's home asking for forgiveness and explains why he did what he did, but Ivy doesn´t forgive him. Still feeling angry at her mother, Ivy decides to call her estranged father and begins to be in frequent contact with him. When Laurel discovers that Ivy is hanging out with her father, she tries to convince her not to see him. Her father invites her to spend Christmas with him and his family. Ivy agrees until her father states that he doesn´t want to pay for Ivy's college and other expenses that he agreed upon in the divorce. Broken by her father, Ivy goes back to the arms of her mother, who prepares a special Christmas night. In "Liars", Ivy goes to surf and has a major accident where she almost dies, but Dixon saves her. The next day at surf practice, she makes up a story to the coach so she does not have to get into the water. Ivy realizes she needs to get over her new fear of water if she wants her surfing career to continue. Ivy goes to Guru Sona, a friend of Naomi, but her plan to relax doesn´t work. She starts smoking weed and can only surf when she is high. One day, when Laurel comes home, she finds Ivy getting high on the couch. Ivy goes to a specialist, who sends her to get medical marijuana at the store. There, she meets a boy named Raj, and they strike up a friendship over their use of medical marijuana. Ivy continues her friendship with Raj, who she considers a role model. She starts skipping class, but Raj gets angry with her for wasting her life away for marijuana. When Ivy argues that he's doing the same, Raj confesses that he has leukemia and he takes medical marijuana for pain. In "The Enchanted Donkey", Ivy goes with the gang to Mexico on Spring Break to spend some time away from Raj. While there, she buys some weed that makes her sick, but Dixon helps her. She tells him about everything that has happened and the two become friends again. When they return from Mexico, Raj wants to help Ivy get over her fear of water. Ivy goes to prom with Raj. Before they leave for prom, Raj receives the news that he is getting worse and needs to have another treatment. At prom, Raj gets drunk and he and Ivy get into an argument. The next morning, Raj proposes.
In the season finale, "To the Future!", Ivy and Raj tell both her mother and his parents about their decision to get married. Laurel is against it, but Raj's parents approve. Ivy still wants to get married even though her mother tells her she's making a huge mistake. At graduation, Ivy confides in Naomi about her engagement. Naomi offers to plan the wedding, but Ivy only wants something personal. At Ivy's bachelorette party, the girls discover that Adrianna is the one who messed with Silver's pills, which gets her kicked out of the gang. Laurel refuses to attend the wedding, but she ends up coming, which makes Ivy extremely happy. Laurel walks Ivy to the altar. Ivy and Raj get married.
Ivy and Raj move in to the pool house of Naomi's new mansion. They continue to struggle with Raj´s health problems. Naomi drags Ivy into joining her sorority to help with the competition as Ivy continues to worry about Raj's health. After discovering that Raj's chemo treatments aren't working, Ivy decides to put on a charity talent show for Raj in order to raise the funds for an experimental cancer treatment. Ivy's photography teacher Nick convinces her to enter a photography contest with a grand prize of a trip to Papua New Guinea. Ivy is uneasy, but Raj convinces her to enter. Ivy wins, and learns she will be going to New Guinea with Nick. This makes Ivy uncomfortable, as she secretly has some feelings for him. When Raj receives the news that the treatments have worked, the couple are in a good place until Raj decides he wants to enroll at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland. However, Ivy wants Raj to come with her to New Guinea and then return to LA where their friends and family are. The two continue to argue over whether or not they should move or even stay together. Ivy begins to question their relatively rash decision to get married. Raj's doctor tells him that his cancer is still present and the treatments did not actually work. Ivy finds Raj and professes her love for him, but he decides to not tell her that his cancer has come back and instead ask for a divorce to give Ivy a better life. During the trip, Ivy has sex with Nick, but she only sees it as a rebound sex and pushes him away when they return home. Later, she realizes that she needs to move on from Raj and gives Nick another opportunity.
In "Mama Can You Hear Me?," Nick tells Ivy he has signed with an agency and is going to Afghanistan on a combat photojournalism assignment. Ivy asks Naomi to give Nick a job as a photographer at her event. Nick happens to meet a documentarian at the event and gets another job as a still photographer. Ivy confesses that she does not want another relationship where she has to worry whether the other person is alive or not. Ivy apologizes and they decide to try to make it work. Before Nick goes to Afghanistan, he talks to Sonia Reese about seeing Ivy's portfolio for her next art show. When Ivy goes to talk to Sonia, Sonia mentions that she also dated Nick and refuses to include Ivy's work in the gallery. Ivy returns to negotiate with Sonia. Sonia gives constructive feedback that Ivy’s portfolio is all faces and she legitimately doesn't like it, but does decide to take a second look at Ivy’s portfolio. Sonia eventually agrees to hang Ivy's work in her gallery.
Ivy is passing out fliers for her gallery opening when a skateboarder named Diego hits her. Ivy asks him to come to her gallery opening, but he refuses. Ivy later goes to the gallery with Annie and finds it graffitied. Sonia shows up and immediately cancels the showing. Ivy guesses that Diego graffitied her showing and goes to confront him. He tells her art is supposed to mean something and isn’t just supposed to be pretty pictures. Ivy eventually shows her art at Annie’s benefit, where someone bids $5000 for a piece just because they can. Ivy realizes the point in Diego's logic and goes to his garage to spray paint a piece. Diego wants Ivy to do street art, but she is apprehensive. Ivy decides to do so and says it’s only for art, not for him. While spray painting the side of a building, they have a close encounter with the police. The relationship quickly turns romantic.Ivy gets a call from Sonia, who recognizes the art on the building as Ivy's. Ivy and Diego go to Sonia’s gallery and Sonia tells them their graffiti is beautiful. She gives them an ultimatum to either do a show at her gallery or she’ll tell the cops about the graffiti. Diego doesn’t want to sell out his art, but Ivy is annoyed with his pretentiousness. Ivy wants validation of her relationship with Diego, but he doesn’t want to define it. After Ivy tries to salvage Annie`s bag business at the festival, Diego stops by to see Ivy. Ivy apologizes for overreacting earlier. Diego asks her to be his girlfriend and she says yes. In "The Heart Will Go On," Ivy and Diego are together when she finds her divorce papers from Raj that she hasn't signed yet. Ivy later tells Diego that she filled out the Artist-In-Residence program for him, but she wants to travel the world. Diego tells her he doesn’t want to break up, but he also doesn’t want Ivy to give up on her dream for him. After the beach cleanup, Dixon tells Ivy that Raj is dying. Ivy goes to see Raj and is furious that he lied about his health to her. Raj tells her he didn’t want her to see him like this. Ivy is heartbroken and tells him she wants to be with him.
Raj tries to catch up with Ivy, but she doesn’t want to talk about herself. Ivy leaves to get Raj some water and when she returns, Raj has died. Ivy at first seems to handle his death well, and wants everyone to stop telling her they feel sorry for her. After the funeral, Raj’s mom gives Ivy Raj’s ashes, but she refuses to take them. Caleb tries to get Ivy to express her feelings. Ivy reveals that she is upset that the funeral didn't embody Raj. Caleb suggests that’s how Raj’s family wanted to say goodbye to him and suggests she plan a beach wake.During the wake, everyone speaks of their memories of Raj. Ivy tells the group that Raj was a liar and breaks down. That night, Ivy goes into a violent ocean to go surfing. She is still struggling with the passing of her husband.
